CLASSROOM TRANSFORMATION

Poetry Reading Cafe

Classroom transformations are an extraordinary way for teachers to excite learning in students and have them be actively involved in their education. Teachers have the opportunity to be creative and engage their students at any age or grade level.

The classroom transformation pictured below is an example of a poetry reading cafe transformation conducted in a first grade classroom. Two instruction units were combined into one large culminating project that excited students from the very beginning. Students wrote their own poems and read them to the class. They also designed their own menus with appropriate food and prices for a cafe. The students counted their fake money they earned for positive behavior in order to "purchase" snacks to eat at the cafe while they and their peers read their poems.
